25 Oct 2024 (Odisha Tazanews) Pune :-> A small sheet room becomes the accommodation for the laborers who return home after twelve hours of hard work. 20 to 25 workers per room, sleeping on two-story cotbases… and this vulnerable colony is just one example. A picture of the horrors of the lives of hundreds of construction workers living in one such unauthorized chali in Bhosari-Sadgurunagar came to light on Thursday (24th), when five workers died in a sudden bursting of a cement water tank. On the insecurity of workers’ accommodation: In some places temporar accommodation of workers is provided on the construction site itself, while in some places colonies are set up outside. But, how official are these settlements? What are the security measures in it? These questions have been brought to the fore by this incident.
The labor leaders have demanded that a case of culpable homicide be registered against the contractors and builders involved in the accident. Hands up Labor Department: When the labor department was asked about the incident, it was said that the concerned colony was not under their jurisdiction. “Since the colony is outside the construction site, no rules apply,” explained Upper Labor Commissioner Shailendra Pol. Since there is no concrete solution regarding this incident, the department has shaken its hand. The agony of a vulnerable colony: The labor colony in Bhosari-Sadgurunagar is in the red zone.
More than 1000 workers are accommodated in about 40 rooms. There is no proper facility of drinking water, one and a half thousand people depend on a single borewell. There is no bathroom, but the toilet situation is bad. Primary health facilities and fire fighting system are also not available. Construction laborers face the problem of fixed wages. Labor leader Kashinath Nakhate has demanded that a case of culpable homicide be registered against the builders and contractors after this incident. “The safety of workers is the responsibility of the contractor, the office of the labor commissioner and the building permit department,” Nakhate said.
