Bhubaneswar (Odisha Tazanews) BBSR :- To strengthen and expand the State’s power transmission infrastructure, Government of Odisha has approved the investment proposal of ₹15,948.70 crore which is the single largest investment in Odisha’s power sector.
This landmark initiative reflects the Government’s commitment to a robust, reliable, and future-ready transmission network to support Odisha’s long-term economic and sustainable development.
The highlights of transmission infrastructure investment approval are:

For the first time, the State Government will introduce 765 kV transmission networks with three new Grid Sub-Stations at Khuntuni, Duburi and Kolabira to support industrial growth, domestic demand and renewable energy integration.

Odisha has currently five 400kV Grid Sub-Stations. Six more 400 KV GSS are under implementation currently. With two more approved today at Kansbahal and Titlagarh the total number of 400 kV Grid Sub-Stations in Odisha will increase from 5 to 13. This will also extend OPTCL’s 400 KV network to the west of Jharsuguda.

Similarly, till 2024 Odisha had 48 numbers of 220 KV Grid Substations. Six 220 KV GSS were added during the last 2 years and 11 more are under implementation. With ten more approved today, the total number of 220 kV Grid Sub-Stations in Odisha will increase from 48 to 75. This will complete the 220 KV ring network in Rourkela, Sambalpur and Bargarh. Bhubaneswar 220 KV ring network was completed in March 2026.

These initiatives will also create adequate network for evacuation of power from the floating solar projects of Hirakud & Indravati and ground mounted solar projects of western & southern Odisha.

AI-Based Maintenance will be introduced for smarter inspection and predictive maintenance of transmission lines.

79 existing substations will be upgraded to meet increasing load demand.

OPTCL will double its transformation capacity from 29889 MVA to 63,364 MVA.

The entire OPTCL network will be automated through Network Automation (STAMS), enabling remote monitoring and operation from four control hubs at Bhubaneswar, Berhampur, Jharsuguda and Balasore.
The overall impact of this initiative will be the creation of a stronger, smarter, more reliable, resilient and future-ready transmission network for Odisha,
capable of supporting the State’s growing industrial, urban and renewable-energy requirements. This will be a significant step forward towards realizing the vision of Viksit Odisha–2036.
