The country suffers a particularly high burden of blood disorders like anemia, thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, hemophilia and blood cancers. Odisha has documented highest number of Sickle Cell Disease (Major: 2.2%, Minor: 8.5% of Odisha Population) in the country during National Sickle Cell Elimination Programme. ODISHA SCENARIO

Odisha has taken great strides in the field of hematology over the years. It has infact become a model state in the country for services provided to patients, most of which are completely free to all patients including those from other States.

The State Government by its initiative has not only established a full-fledged Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) facility at SCB MCH, which is the only Government hospital in India to provide BMT, but also ensured the entire transplant services are free. Till date, as many as 180 blood cancer patients have successfully received BMT completely free of cost. IMS & SUM Hospital is another center in Odisha which provides BMT services and equipped with a fully fledged Clinical Hematology department. AIIMS,

Bhubaneswar, KIMS, Bagchi Cancer Hospital and Apollo Hospitals also provides the services of fully fledged Hematology / Oncology department in addition to BMT services. Govt. of Odisha has also opened a full fledged Clinical Hematology Department in VIMSAR, Burla and is planning to open in other institutions in near future including PGIMER, Bhubaneswar and MKCG Medical College, Berhampur.

The State has also made blood supply free for thalassemia, sickle cell disease and hemophilia along with free provisioning of lifesaving medicines and blood factors for patients. The ‘Odisha Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassaemia control programme’ has been initiated by Govt. of Odisha recently for an holistic approach to check these huge medical problems – First of its kind in the entire country and is doing a great job for implementation of National Sickle Cell Elimination Programme.

There are Day Care Centers functioning in many places including Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Burla and Berhampur to provide health care easily to Thalassemia, Sickle Cell Disease, Hemophilia and Blood Cancer patients.

Thousands of the patients like Thalassaemia, Sickle Cell Disease, Aplastic Anemia, Various blood cancer and other cancer patients need BMT procedure for cure and survival in our state. There is a huge gap in the availability of such facilities and thus needs urgent attention.

The Government is also taking steps to provide expensive medicines for blood cancer and other blood diseases free to all patients by various welfare schemes.  The Government is actively addressing the above issues to facilitate the management of all types of blood diseases in different part of our State.
