October 31, 2023, Bhubaneswar :
India is grappling with a significant challenge in combating the escalating prevalence of various diseases, spanning from infectious and lifestyle-related to chronic conditions. Among these, blood disorders such as anemia, thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, hemophilia, and blood cancers pose a formidable burden on the nation’s healthcare system.
Latest estimates indicate that over 50 percent of India’s population is affected by various forms of anemia, including genetic, hereditary, and nutrition-related deficiencies. Thalassemia affects more than 5 percent of India’s population, while sickle cell disease remains a pressing health concern in many parts of the nation, with incidence rates soaring as high as 60 percent in specific areas and communities. Furthermore, blood disorders like hemophilia and blood cancers continue to represent major health challenges in the country.
Despite concerted efforts by the Government of India and State Governments through various health programs aimed at addressing anemia, Sickle Cell Disease, and Thalassaemia, the anticipated results have not materialized due to multifaceted reasons.
Against this backdrop, the Indian Society of Haematology and Blood Transfusion (ISHBT) is set to host its 64rd Annual Conference – Haematocon2023 – in Bhubaneswar from November 2-5, 2023.
Organising secretary Haematocon2023 and Prof & Head of Clinical Haematology Department of SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, Prof Rabindra Kumar Jena said, “The primary objective of this conference is to engage in comprehensive discussions on the prevalence of blood disorders and diseases, as well as emerging issues within the field of hematology. Participants will engage in knowledge exchange on the latest advancements in diagnosis and treatment, along with reorienting medical professionals in alignment with recent developments. The central focus will be on the holistic management of blood diseases of public health significance, including anemia and sickle cell disease. Additionally, discussions will encompass progress related to various blood cancers such as Leukemias, Lymphomas, Myelomas, and other blood-related conditions.”
More than 1500 doctors from various regions of India and abroad including USA, Canada, UK, France, Italy, etc, along with representatives from ASH, EHA, Sickle Global Network, Government of India, Government of Odisha and other stakeholders, will participate in the conference. The Workshop and Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs will feature contributions from 40 globally renowned hematologists and over 100 other distinguished experts from India, sharing their invaluable knowledge and expertise with participants, Prof Jena added.
